Blood Series
Developed during Charlotte’s residency at De Montfort University in 2015, Blood Series is a limited run of blown vessels, an endlessly evolving wall installation and blown glass jewellery. Inspiration was taken from microscopic images of Charlotte’s own blood, obtained through the generosity and hospitality of Southampton General Hospital and their art/science collaboration program which was running at the time.
In the production of the Blood Vessels, Charlotte played the role of facilitator, letting the heat and weight of the glass dictate how the vessel was shaped when left to hang and sag. Gravity was an essential tool in the creation of their final form. Each vessel was blown with multiple layers of colour, which were revealed through the cutting and carving of each piece. Dramatic cuts on the openings of the vessels created a harsh contrast to the organic, flowing forms. A cascade of lenses were carved into the surface, to soften the transition between the two.
The wall installation was made up of individually blown and cold worked forms that adapt to the space they are situated in. Originally starting as forty red pieces that were taken to showrooms and exhibitions, this ever evolving artwork has been permanently installed in homes across London, made to the colour and quantities requested by the clients.
The blown, hemispherical pendants are a simple celebration of the beauty of glass and its breathtaking material qualities.
